Every day, one out of 20 hospitalized patients has an infection caused by medical care. Healthcare-associated infections are costly to businesses and are potentially lethal to employees. CDC plays a vital role in helping businesses safeguard their workforces from infections.

In conjunction with International Infection Prevention Week, the CDC Foundation is launching an enhanced website for www.preventcancerinfections.org, an evidence-based, interactive resource targeted to assessing a cancer patient’s risk for developing a low white blood cell count and subsequent infections from chemotherapy.

To expand on CDC’s efforts to improve hand hygiene in U.S. healthcare settings and communities by creating new materials tailored to key settings in specialty areas. In addition, this project will develop an educational component focused on the promotion of hand hygiene in community settings for the public, childcare providers, caregivers of young children, school teachers and students.

To educate youth in Haiti on dog bites and rabies prevention through an educational comic book.

To further research how viral ovarian tumor protease activity is critical for replication and host tropism of nairoviruses.

To support the characterization of non-rotavirus viral diarrheal pathogens to inform the body of work that contributes to optimize the efficacy of rotavirus vaccines.

To develop cell culture and small animal models of Nipah virus replication and pathogenesis in a biosafety level (BSL) 4 lab.

To support an annual planning meeting and provide technical assistance in India regarding infection prevention and control data sharing and best practices.

To develop a comprehensive education campaign targeting cancer patients, their families and their providers to reduce the risk of infection in multiple settings (outpatient office, hospital and home).

To further research how viral ovarian tumor protease (vOTU) activity is critical for replication and host tropism of nairoviruses.

To investigate other novel interventions, such as monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against malaria. An intervention that could prevent malaria in children for a full 12 months in settings of perennial malaria transmission, such as Kenya, holds potential to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality substantially in this population at risk for severe malaria and death.
