National Hypertension Control Program
Tackling High Blood Pressure, Saving Lives
Uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension) is a major public health crisis. It is one of the leading causes of heart disease, strokes and preventable deaths in the U.S. The National Hypertension Control Program is taking action. As the newest initiative under the CDC Foundation’s Million Hearts® Alliance, this program will bring together public and private partners to drive national and local solutions to control hypertension and prevent deadly outcomes.
The Hypertension Problem
High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it has no obvious symptoms—until it’s too late. Here’s what we know:
• Nearly 75 percent of cardiovascular disease deaths in the U.S. are linked to hypertension
• Nearly half of U.S. adults (48.1 percent) have hypertension, but most don’t have it under control
• 3 in 4 people with hypertension are not managing it effectively
• Many don’t even know they have it
Despite these alarming facts, hypertension is both preventable and manageable—with the right support and interventions.
How We’re Taking Action
The National Hypertension Control Program will drive impact through three key strategies:
- National Hypertension Awareness Campaign – A nationwide campaign using social marketing and behavior change strategies to increase awareness and encourage action
- National Community Outreach – Providing tools, training, and support to public health agencies, healthcare providers, community-based organizations and trusted messengers who serve priority populations
- Local Community Intervention – Investing in on-the-ground initiatives, starting with the Atlanta Hypertension Initiative, to drive regional progress through partnerships and shared goals
Our Strategy for Success
• Engaging Trusted Messengers: Partnering with respected community voices to educate and empower people to manage their blood pressure
• Strengthening Connections: Providing resources to patients, healthcare providers and community organizations to ensure people get the support they need
• Building Local Capacity: Investing in training, funding and technical support for organizations already doing the work—so they can move faster and make a bigger impact
