The Healthy People 2020 Law and Health Policy Project, a collaboration between the CDC Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released the first of a series of evidence-based reports. The report highlights the state of laws and policies related to the Healthy People nutrition and weight status topic area, specifically increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables.

With Hurricane Florence churning toward the U.S. East Coast, the potential for catastrophic damage from winds and flooding looms large. To ready a response addressing immediate and long-term health challenges generated by the storm, the CDC Foundation today activated its Emergency Response Fund for Hurricane Florence. This fund is used to extend the emergency response efforts of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health organizations working on the ground in affected communities.

James Marks has been elected to the board of directors of the CDC Foundation. Marks recently retired from his role as executive vice president for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), where he oversaw all grantmaking, research and communications activities for the nation’s largest philanthropy dedicated solely to health.

The CDC Foundation and Amgen announced several new initiatives that will be available this summer as part of the Preventing Infections in Cancer Patients (PICP) program. The PICP program has been supported by Amgen and led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation since the program’s launch in 2009.

James F. Sallis, PhD, a distinguished professor emeritus of family medicine and public health at the University of California San Diego and professorial fellow at Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, was presented the 2018 Elizabeth Fries Health Education Award.

The Lancet Public Health published an article examining the initial results of the Zika Contraception Access Network (Z-CAN), one of the strategies established to prevent Zika-related birth defects in Puerto Rico.

For the eleventh consecutive year, the CDC Foundation has achieved a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator. Four stars is the highest rating awarded by Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities. 

Lex Frieden, MA, LLD, receives the 2017 Fries Prize for Improving Health for being an architect of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and a catalyst in the worldwide disability rights and independent living movements.

In the wake of some of the worst flooding in U.S. history, the CDC Foundation today is activating its Emergency Response Fund to help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tackle the health challenges that the citizens of Texas and Louisiana are facing following Hurricane Harvey. The fund will extend CDC’s response, providing essential supplies and vital assistance as frontline experts work with partners to address community health needs and public health infrastructure in the storm’s aftermath.

Following last year’s impactful collaboration between Walgreens and the CDC Foundation addressing the Zika outbreak, the two organizations are once again working together to help address another public health challenge—HIV prevention. To help extend the CDC Foundation’s important research and demonstration project, Walgreens made a donation today to help fund the CDC Foundation’s Sustainable Healthcenter Implementation PrEP Pilot (SHIPP) study.
