The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plays a vital role in helping businesses prepare for and respond to public health emergencies. In the first of a new series of quarterly business features, CDC’s connection with business and public health preparedness and response is highlighted, coinciding with September’s National Preparedness Month.

Raymond J. Baxter, Ph.D., has been elected to the board of directors of the CDC Foundation. Baxter is Kaiser Permanente’s senior vice president for community benefit, research and health policy.

In advance of World Hepatitis Day on July 28, champions for viral hepatitis screening, care and treatment were honored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC Foundation and the Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition at a reception in Washington, DC.

A study conducted by RTI International in nine states concludes that statewide smoke-free laws would not be expected to have an adverse economic impact on restaurants and bars in these states. The study, which was supported by the CDC Foundation, was released today in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

The CDC Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launch a new Heads Up to Parents website and app. These new resources provide an important tool for parents and coaches who play a key role in helping to keep kids and teens safe from concussion and other serious brain injuries.

The Government of Turkey today announced that substantially fewer Turkish adult citizens smoked cigarettes in 2012 versus 2008. In its announcement, the Turkish government cited results from its second round of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). The survey showed that 14.8 million people or 27.1 percent of the Turkish population indicated that they smoked in 2012 versus 16 million people or 31.2 percent of the population in 2008. This work was made possible by a grant to the CDC Foundation from Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.

Charles Stokes, CDC Foundation president and CEO, in a ceremony last evening received the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 2013 Health-Care Hero Lifetime Achievement Award for his work helping the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advance its life-saving 24/7 work through public-private partnerships.

Pierce Nelson will oversee the CDC Foundation’s strategic communications efforts aimed at connecting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation with the private sector.
