Accelerating Public Health Data Modernization through Public Private Partnerships

Dallas Future of Public Health Data Summit
On May 21-22, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) and CDC Foundation hosted an in-person data summit in Dallas, Texas. The purpose of the Dallas Future of Public Health Data Summit was to develop a roadmap for local data modernization priorities aligned to the future of public health data.

CDC Health Data Innovation Summit
On September 27-28, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and CDC Foundation hosted a hybrid (virtual and in-person) summit at CDC Headquarters. The purpose of the CDC Health Data Innovation Summit was to bring together key partners to continue to share insights on high priority public health information challenges and to initiate collaborations to address those challenges. Key partners included public health agencies, healthcare providers, community-based organizations, academia, technology vendors, industry, and others.  

The event focused on informing partners about CDC’s strategic direction and highest priorities, providing networking opportunities and educating CDC Staff about important tools and methods used by industry through abstract presentations.

Washington Health Data Innovation Summit
This event was held on August 17-18 in Seattle, WA and was a collaboration between the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH), University of Washington (UW), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the CDC Foundation. The summit brought together key partners to learn about, and collaborate on, high priority public health information challenges that impact the health, wellness and prosperity of Washingtonians. The goal of the summit was to convene distinguished representatives from the public and private sectors to showcase examples of successful partnerships between regional government and industry and consider catalytic opportunities to unlock and modernize essential public health information. These opportunities focused on how multi-sector partnerships can drive innovation in health data information systems – innovations that ultimately help improve health outcomes, lower healthcare costs, and spur economic growth for every Washingtonian.

Utah Partnerships for Turning Data into Action – A Health Data Innovation Summit
Convened in collaboration with the CDC Foundation in follow up to the recent CDC-ONC Industry Days, this event held on June 21-22, 2023 in Salt Lake City, Utah brought together key partners to learn about, and collaborate on, high priority public health information challenges that impact the health, wellness and prosperity of Utahns. The summit convened distinguished representatives from the public and private sectors to consider catalytic opportunities to unlock and modernize essential public health information that can be used by communities, families, businesses, and government for better, faster decision making. These opportunities focused on how multi-sector partnerships can drive innovation in health data information systems – innovations that ultimately help improve health outcomes, lower healthcare costs, and spur economic growth for every Utahn. This inaugural summit offered an important model for unlocking the value and impact of health information. The partnership model can be used by national, state and local partners to transform how health information serves the public’s health, communities, and diverse sectors.

CDC-ONC Industry Days
On February 27-28, 2023, at the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C., the CDC Foundation convened the first joint Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Industry Information and Collaboration Days. CDC and ONC Industry Days inform CDC staff about external resources for accomplishing the CDC's mission and inform industry about opportunities and processes for doing business with CDC. It illuminates opportunities for CDC to leverage the skills, knowledge, and resources of industry, helping CDC to work more quickly and to use the most effective methods and tools available in the marketplace.

Industry Days Webinar
On January 12, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and CDC Foundation hosted a pre-event webinar to provide information and discuss topic areas for the CDC-ONC Industry Days event in February. The goal was to present strategy for modernizing public health data and information systems from:

  • CDC Deputy Director Public Health Science and Surveillance
  • CDC Center for Forecasting and Analytics
  • CDC Office of the Chief Information Officer
  • Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)
